We had talked about it for a while.
And then we just did it.
We adopted an amazing cat through the animal shelter.
One of the weirdest transitions from living with my parents to being married was suddenly becoming "petless". I know some young adults are able to take their pets along with them once they move out, but that wasn't the case for me. My family's cats, rabbit, and pet chicken were perfectly content with my mom and dad. Moving them would have been too harsh of an adjustment. Shawn's family has some pet dogs and farm animals, but none that he was going to be able to move either, so we were suddenly "petless".
Then came our trip to the shelter, and our visit with Sydney Grace. Yes, our cat has a first and middle name. We plan on spoiling her . . . The shelter we chose to adopt from has a partnership with a local pet store, so we went to the pet store to see which "shelter cats" they had available. Sydney was the first one we were drawn to, and the first one that won our hearts. I almost cried when the pet store employee flipped her tag to say "I found a home" while we shopped for a carrier and other pet supplies.
She is our pride and joy. The first addition to our family. I love having her in the house with me when Shawn isn't home. Our work and school schedules never seem to coincide so we are rarely home together. Having someone that stays home all the time has really been a blessing. She is extremely playful and keeps us on our toes. We took her to the vet for a wellness check, and she got a clean bill of health apart from some gingivitis that we got some medicine for. Any tips on getting her to take it? We are so thankful to have this crazy cat in our lives and are excited for whatever other future additions God will provide.
Her fourteen day trial period is complete. I phoned the shelter to let them know that we were absolutely not bringing her back.
I hope to have some pictures coming soon . . .
What about you? Have you ever adopted a pet through the shelter?
Are any of you in a new "petless" phase?
Thanks for reading,
Keep living joyfully,
Melody Maynard
