After Dad and Shawn came to a mutual agreement, we continued seeing each other almost every day. We were more like family than friends, and it was wonderful. We did everything together, including filling out countless job applications online when he had to find a new job, or running errands at the grocery store. We clicked more and more as the days continued.
About four months into dating, we began to talk about marriage. I'm not sure how the topic surfaced, but we talked naturally and with the utmost sincerity. I figured that I would have to finish college first. Yet his presence did make my college decision an easy choice. The faraway Christian colleges that I had been considering attending held little appeal anymore. After five months of dating, Shawn asked his dad for his blessing. When it was well received, Shawn made yet another visit to my dad and gained his blessing as well.
As the months went on, I was more and more determined that Shawn would be a great husband.
He carried my bass for me everywhere we went.
He claims he "can't carry a tune in a bucket", yet he always had a song in his heart.
He was slow to anger and quick to forgive.
He was quick to listen and quick to have a witty comeback.
He was steady and sure, the type of love that any young woman needs.
He was everything I never knew I wanted.
Our dating time was not perfect, we are, after all imperfect human beings. On rare occasions we argued, on frequent occasions we struggled with our purity, but on every occasion we learned and grew together. We experienced God's grace in every aspect of our dating life.
As high school graduation became edging closer, I couldn't help but feel a longing for a ring on my finger . . . Then one Sunday in May . . .
Stay tuned for the next part: Our Love Story (The Engagement)
